Content
A one-day course intended to demystify the nature, function and purpose of social networks built around software such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, MySpace, Ning or Blogster. Through practical engagement, learners will develop an appreciation of how social networks operate, how to use them to develop an online presence and how they can be deployed for effective marketing and PR.

Who should attend
Media freelances and those preparing to become media freelances who want a simple way to acquire an online presence in order to promote and market themselves and their work.

Qualifications
This is not a technical course, but one which requires some experience of using the Internet. An understanding of traditional marketing and promotional strategies will help.

Expected learning outcomes
Learners will understand the distinctions between different types of social network, and different social network products - how they are used by different audiences and how best to use them. Learners will build their own online presence using one or more social networks and discover how to evaluate the importance and effectiveness of different social media.

About the FEU

The Federation of Entertainment Union acts as a forum for exchanging ideas and information between the TUC affiliated unions in media and entertainment and co-ordinates campaigns on issues of common concern.

The FEU has three specialist committees:

  • Training
  • Equalities
  • The Olympics

It aims to help specialist officials to work closely together while preventing duplication. It is also helpful for those bodies with which we deal individually, in that it provides a joint forum for the likes of Offcom and the BBC to meet and consult with all the relevant unions at single meeting.
