Writing for the Web

Friday, 9 October 2009 | BOOK IT

Content
A one-day course for media workers who need to write, edit or mark up copy for different types of websites in order to enhance their impact and improve their ratings in major search engines. The course will cover personal sites, and sites for news, PR, and marketing. Learners will produce copy and will publish it on a website using a simple content management system. Learners will consider the impact of layout, linking and visual material but the course will not cover web development as such.

Who should attend
Media freelances and those preparing to become media freelances who already do, or plan to, contribute or prepare written content for websites. It may also be of interest to those wanting to improve their writing skills.

Qualifications
Students should have basic writing skills, and should know how to use the Internet. The course is suitable for PC and Mac users. A knowledge of basic HTML [Hypertext Markup Language – the code used to create web pages] would be helpful, but is not essential.

Expected learning outcomes
Learners will be able to write and edit copy for publication on the web, and to add basic HTML mark up for text formatting and hypertext linking. They will appreciate the critical differences between different writing styles and their suitability for different formats. They will learn to use a basic content management system and gain an appreciation of the way writing style and language structures can affect search engine ratings.

About the FEU

The Federation of Entertainment Union acts as a forum for exchanging ideas and information between the TUC affiliated unions in media and entertainment and co-ordinates campaigns on issues of common concern.

The FEU has three specialist committees:

  • Training
  • Equalities
  • The Olympics

It aims to help specialist officials to work closely together while preventing duplication. It is also helpful for those bodies with which we deal individually, in that it provides a joint forum for the likes of Offcom and the BBC to meet and consult with all the relevant unions at single meeting.
